CLAY BIRD MAGNETS DIY

April 10, 2018

Today I am sharing a really fun and really easy DIY tutorial on how to make clay bird magnets! Spring is in the air, and I don’t know about you, but I am antsy for warmer weather and sunshine. Inspired by spring, I designed these clay birds to be magnets, but they can easily be used as gift tags and even ornaments.

And the best part is, they are easy to make, they’re paint-free, and there are limitless possibilities on how to decorate them! To quote the late great Bob Ross, “It’s your world, and you can do whatever you want with it”.

So, grab your clay and your washi tape and let’s make some super cute clay bird magnets!

Air-Dry Clay

Rolling Pin

Bird Cookie Cutter

Washi Tape

Letter Stamper

Magnet Strips with Adhesive Backing

Instructions

01. First, you want to take the clay and roll it out evenly to about to 5mm thick

02. Next, press the bird cookie cutter into clay

03. Clean up edges of bird cut outs by smoothing edges and removing excess clay

04. With the letter stamper, press spring words into the clay. I’ve used the words “tweet” and “spring”, and I mixed and matched them in a variety of ways

( Note: my letter stamper comes with a little press that you can insert individual letters into. Be aware that when you load up the press with the letters, you should put them in backward! )

05. Set birds aside to allow the clay to dry

06. Once the clay has dried to the point that it is firm to the touch, you can start decorating with the washi tape! Place tape in any pattern you desire, and firmly press it around the edges of the bird

(For my bird magnets, I used three similarly colored patterns. I wanted patterns that looked uniquely different but harmonized well together. Experiment with what you love!)

07. Remove the backing of the magnets and attach to the backs of the birds
