5 UNIQUE DATES FOR CREATIVE COUPLES

February 5, 2020

Chances are if you’ve come upon my humble blog you may consider yourself to be a creative person. And since you are awesome and amazing, there is also a good chance that you could be looking for date ideas to do with your equally awesome and amazing SO. I know that around this time of year I am just itching to do something creative and fun while the winter weather oppresses this Midwest state that I live in. Over the years, my boyfriend and I have been able to go on a lot of creative, sweet, and silly adventures, and I wanted to share a list of fabulous date ideas that are great for other creative couples!

Date 1- Blind Contour Portrait Drawing

I am trying to spread the word on how fun this activity is! What is a blind portrait drawing, you ask? Well, to put it simply, it is the act of drawing someone (a friend, SO, pet, etc), using a single line, and not LOOKING DOWN AT YOUR PAPER! Sounds challenging, you say? Well…it is …but it isn’t. Challenging because you have to trust your drawing instincts and not look or pick up your pencil…but easy because it is all about the challenge more than the end result, and the end result is usually pretty amusing!

Why it makes for a perfect date: Imagine setting down your phones and turning off Netflix and spending a set amount of time just really looking at each other, examining each other’s features and making a lot of steamy eye contact. Throw in a bottle of wine in the mix, and you are in for a really connected intimate night, that’s sure to be filled with lots of giggles as you show each other your drawings. You can make it into a contest, or draw multiple versions in various poses and pick your favorites and hang them up! Another nice thing about this activity is everyone is pretty much on an even playing field as far as artistic talent goes, so even if you and/or your partner don’t consider yourselves talented artists, you can still enjoy this activity together.

Date 2 – Pottery Painting

In my town, there is an adorable little studio where you can go and paint premade green (unfired in the kiln) pieces of pottery. I love going here and picking out a special piece and putting my own quirk and twist on it. If you look around your area, you are sure to find some kind of a studio where you can do the same or do a similar activity, like wine and canvas painting. You just have to see what your area has to offer!

Why it makes for a perfect date: Again, this is another phones free activity where you can slow down your day with your partner and connect. Pick out pieces together, talk about what designs you are going to make, help each other or paint one piece together. Bond together as you make something you can both use at home or with decorations that you can share for a lifetime! What can I say? I just love a date that ends with a souvenir at the end!

Want to do something a little more advanced? Take an art class or a cooking class together! Learn how to make pottery on the wheel and play Ghost with each other! It also helps if it is something that you both are new to, so you can grow and challenge each other at the same speed.

Date 3 – Take An Unique Shopping Trip

Think outside of the box and instead of going to Target, take a trip and check out local art galleries, antique stores, estate sales, thrift stores, and small boutiques!

Why it makes for a perfect date:  First, a lot of these small and off the beaten path places are in the middle of nowhere, so it is a great excuse to take a little road trip or explore a part of your city you’ve never been to. At art galleries or boutiques, you can pick out your favorite work of art and talk about what draws you to it. Learn more about your partner’s tastes and what they are passionate about, and come home with a new piece. The same thing applies to antique stores, thrift stores, and estate sales, but this could turn into bonus dates in the future if you find a special piece that you can refurbish together or something that you can turn into your own art.

Bonus, you’d be supporting local artists and businesses and that is just awesome!

Date 4 – Visit Your Local Theatre/Improv Group/Dance Company/Orchestra/Small Movie Theater

Speaking of supporting local artists; that includes musicians, storytellers, dancers, and actors. There are people in your community that actively want to entertain you! Depending on where you are, it might take a little digging to find a little troop of these entertainers, but once you do, you are in for an endless supply of culture and entertainment. There are also a lot of small movie theaters around that play classic, indie, art house, and foreign films that you’d probably never catch in a large theater!

Why it makes for a perfect date:  There is something magical about getting dressed up and seeing a play or live dance done before you. You feel like you are a part of something bigger than yourself and sharing that experience with your SO can be so powerful. As the performer’s act/play their hearts out, you get to go on the roller coaster ride of emotion together and possibly have entertaining debates later on what you did and didn’t like about it. Or on a less serious note, laugh together at some improv or a great indie film you’ve never seen before

Can’t find a local troop of performers? You could always put together with your SO!

Date 5 – Design and Get Tattoos Together

Sit down together and think about a symbol or an icon that uniquely represents your relationship/love for each other. Or maybe design something based on an inside joke that is just between the two of you.

Why it makes for a perfect date:  This is a great way to memorialize something special about your relationship together. Plus, when you go to get the tattoos done you can hold hands and be there for each other while it is being done. It is just a touch of pain for a lifetime of sweet memories
